If you live in Sullivan County — whether in Kingsport, Bristol, Bluff City, or the surrounding communities — you have access to a range of Medicare Advantage plans that bundle your hospital, medical, and often prescription drug coverage into a single plan.
But having more options isn't always easier. The right plan for your neighbor may not be the right plan for you.
What Is Medicare Advantage?
Medicare Advantage (also called Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Instead of using Medicare Parts A and B directly, you get your coverage through the plan.
Most Medicare Advantage plans in Sullivan County include:
- Hospital coverage (Part A equivalent)
- Medical coverage (Part B equivalent)
- Prescription drug coverage (Part D built in)
- Extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness programs
Many plans in the Kingsport and Bristol area have $0 monthly premiums — though you still pay your Part B premium to Medicare.
Carriers Offering Plans in Sullivan County
Several major carriers offer Medicare Advantage plans in the Tri-Cities area, including Kingsport and Bristol. Common options include Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, and Wellcare — but availability, networks, and benefits change every year during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7).
That's why it's important to compare plans each fall rather than assuming your current plan is still the best fit.
What Changes Year to Year
Medicare Advantage plans are allowed to change their premiums, copays, drug formularies, and provider networks annually. A plan that worked well in 2026 may have:
- Dropped a drug you take from its formulary
- Changed your primary care copay
- Narrowed its provider network
- Increased its out-of-pocket maximum
The only way to know is to review your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) — the letter your plan sends each September — and compare it against other available options.
HMO vs. PPO: Which Network Type Is Right for You?
Most Medicare Advantage plans in Sullivan County are either HMO or PPO plans.
HMO plans typically require you to use in-network providers and get referrals to see specialists. They often have lower premiums and copays.
PPO plans give you more flexibility to see out-of-network providers, though at a higher cost. If you travel frequently or have specialists outside the Tri-Cities area, a PPO may be worth the higher premium.
Holston Valley and Ballad Health: Does Your Plan Cover Them?
For Sullivan County residents, two of the most important network questions are:
- Is Holston Valley Medical Center in-network?
- Does the plan work with Ballad Health providers?
Not every Medicare Advantage plan contracts with every local hospital or physician group. Before enrolling, always verify that your current doctors and preferred hospitals are in-network.
